The deep fried truth article response

In the article “The Deep Fried Truth” It talks of how much even though we are more environmentally friendly, we have a long way to go before this problem is solved. Hopefully however, this is the pinnacle of gas emissions and they will go down. This will not occur however without much scrupulous study of the subject. This article specifically targets a conniving and discreet part of gas emissions, food. Farming and food manufacturing equipment contribute a lot to the atrophy of this planet. This subject has caused much divisiveness because some still believe Global Warming to be fabricated. Until everyone acknowledges the problem, it will not be solved. Let’s just hope it isn’t too late.

Fairy Tales and Gender Roles

As the article states, boys are not as affected by fairy tales but from my experience with little kids, (I work at a preschool over the summer) they seem to look up to princesses and such with admiration. This leaves a lasting impression of beauty. This article also made me respect a movie I didn't care for that much. Shrek. It talks about how the movie tries to get out of the tradition by making the good guy hideous and the beautiful princess becoming an ogre in the end. A large twist on fairy tales indeed. Another interesting thing in the article was the list of the 5 tales that have been reproduced more than 101 times are Cinderella, Snow White, Briar Rose (sleeping beauty), Little Red Cap (Red riding hood), and Hansel and Gretel. Now if you notice of the five books, three have beautiful prinsecces (Snow White, Cinderella, and Briar Rose) and two have ugly witches (Briar Rose and Hansel and Gretel). The only one that dosn't exemplify this beauty is good value is Little Red Cap. So what does that tell us about little children? That they idolise beauty but that is just my opinion. Read the article if you want and make your own.

Morality of fat socratic seminar

Today we had a Socratic seminar about an article we read. To tell you the truth, I wasn't feeling very well during the first half so I didn't absorb that part but I felt better by the second half so I will talk about that. We talked about things like what we could do as a project to help stop the media from influencing people in such extreme ways and teen suicides and such. It seems that the main problem is that people are easily influenced by media and this overload on thinner=better has created an extremely stressful enviorment for kids to grow up in. The only way to truly escape it is not to care about it which is hard. It is very interesting that we are captives of our own mind in this time of fashion and trends. If we believe we aren't part of it, we usually aren't. An idea I had for a project was show a diet pill commercial ad but instead of pill containers, show vegetables by either photoshopping them in or creating an ad that imitates the ads on TV. However, that dosn't promte inner beauty which is suposed to be the goal of the project. We will be doing this project soon probably so I'll probably go more in depth about it later. Response to in the Eye of the Beholder article

I recently read an article about beauty throughout the world and how western civilization has effected it. It opens by talking about size and how in Nigeria, being plump is considered a sign of beauty. Another interesting thing is that the more plain or normal someones face is, the more beautiful they are usually considered. I find it interesting that beauty is the act of being extra ordinary instead of extraordinary. A little joke to lighten the mood but I digress. Another thing that I thought was interesting or poetic was a comment someone wrote.

Beauty is imperfection. Imperfection is character. Character is individuality. Individuality is what you need to fall in Love. And someone you can fall in love with has the truest beauty of all.
Luke Tennant, England

Very poetic. While not wholly related to the topic, It could be interpreted as meaning that trying to become beautiful actually makes you less beautiful. Quite an interesting prospect. However, because Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder, I will not say that the above phrase is universally true.
This was a fairly interesting article from BBC and I think it should be read by whoever has read this post.

Mali skin bleaching response

In Mali, women are bleaching there skin to become more white. They make themselves pallid which is not salubrious for the skin. It is under the mesmeric influence of the media that these women think being white will make them more attractive which is completely embellished to the point of making women destroy there skin to accomplish this form of beauty. They think this will make their husbands jovial but men do not want their wives and girlfriend to be in great pain. The only ones who are ebullient because of this are the makers of the products used. This bleaching can cause skin cancer, great pain, and blemishes. It is also due to salacious ads that exhibit women that this idea of white is better has taken place. This terrible problem will only increase in time unless something is done. We can only hope that this terrible thing will be solved.

Socrates socratic seminar

In this seminar (discussion about soething) we talked about socrates. We also talked about the four greek virtues (Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance, Justice). I will post my notes and then will go in deapth about the seminar in this blog.

Ignorance means justice
eye for eye
No univesal virtue
What is ignorance (lack of 4 virtues?)
Everything is a opinion

I will first go over my first note. I was talking about the saying that "Wrongdoing is a consequence of ignorance" said by Socrates. It means that humans do wrongs out of ignorance.

The second note is referencing the famous saying, eye for an eye. That means that revenge is justice which I made a point of saying when we talked of justice.

No universal virtue means that virtue is in the eye of the beholder. in other words every thing is of opinion which i will go into later.

Someone suggested that ignorance was the lack of the four virtues which are Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance, and Justice. It also means that our wellbeing depends on these 4 virtues.

The last thing is something that I brought up throughout the seminar. Everything is of opinion. To clarify this prospect, we must look at what a fact is. Facts are percived by the mind and therfore opinions. That means that being opinions they are not deffinet andnothing is certain or everything is of opinion. So in order to be truly wise, one must know nothing for then they are correct in thinking that their thoughts are their point of veiw.

So those are the notes I took and some explanation of them. The discussion was fairly interesting and I learned my classmates opinions. I know secratic seminars to be great and therefore think it making it my opinion. My logic is immaculate.

You tube Dove commercial response

If you go to the bibliography at the bottom you can see the commercial I watched.

The Dove commercial was fairly weird and I didn’t understand it until the very end. The main idea of this was to show how media can influence a person. Also it wants to let parents know about this danger to their children hence the “talk to your daughter before the beauty industry does”. Another thing was that the music was interestingly compatible with the commercial. I really did not enjoy that commercial or found it relates to me because I am a boy and therefore am less worried about my appearance.

Womens rights in ancient times

In ancient times, women’s rights was a complicated thing. However, I will be focusing on two cities different views on this subject. I will focus on women in Athens and Sparta.
Spartan women where well educated and treated with the same respect as men while Athenian women where not educated (with acceptations for the Hetaerae or high class women) and treated with very little respect.
There is a fairly simple reason for the Greeks, having bent a very advanced society, did not treat women with the same rights as men. They didn’t feel a need to. And those who did feel a need to change didn’t have the power to make those changes in society. And since the ones who had power in Athens where men who saw no flaw in the treat women like property plan, not much was ever changed in women’s rights there. But then one must ask oneself, what about the Spartans? Why where they better with women’s rights? The answer lies in their heritage. One theory about the Spartan women is that they are the remnants of the Amazons, a race of warrior women. This could explain the Spartan’s respect for women.
Now for how this relates to beauty, I will talk of how I think art from these two cultures depicted women.

Athens: short, in the background, not very colorful.
Sparta: medium height or tall, up front, as colorful as the men.

Beauty in youth and ideals

Youth is a beautiful thing. It is an energetic beauty that springs forth into the world. Also, youth to an extent signifies the form of beauty cute which is harder to find the older you get. It holds a unique sort of ignorance that makes it a wonderful thing. A truly beautiful time in life is youth.

The perfect human form is considered part of beauty. However, I believe that due to the fact that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and is usually not realized until seen. However, I will do my best to describe what current culture believes is beautiful in people.

Women: Big eyes, blond or light brown hair, thin, buxom, straight hair, medium height – short, narrow cheeks, no glasses
Men: Blond or brown hair, tall- medium height, wide shoulders, no glasses, wavy and straight hair, no spots on face (freckles or moles)

Finally, for my thoughts on what beauty is. I will be honest. I am not sure I can give an answer because I have not been exposed too much beauty in the form of people.

Beauty

This picture embodies a theme of beauty known as cute. It is the act of making something seem nice in a way that has a tendency to refer to childishness. A perfect example of some different themes of beauty is comparing a poodle and a puppy. One is very elegant and well groomed while the other has a childish charm. The interesting thing about the form of beauty known as cute is that it also encompasses personality and actions. This turtle is cute because as you can see it’s on a finger. That adds scale and another important factor is the eyes. It is widely of opinion that big wondrous eyes or puppy eyes are cute. Also the way it has it’s legs moving is so babyish and beautiful. Now on to the next picyure that encompasses another form of beauty I talked about before. Elegance.

This turtle seems proud and elegant. It looks like it’s gliding across the water. Also the fact that the ridges in the shell point towards the head bring more attention to that. Another beautiful point is the wake line. It once again leads to the head and attract your attention to it. One interesting detail is that the sun is on the side away from the camera. This brings very interesting contrast to the picture as it is going against the standards of lighting up the closest side. However, this also brings out shadows and while that may not be the best choice with an already black leatherback sea turtle. It is quite interesting to see. I love turtles as it is plain to see by the two pictures. I hope you have enjoyed these pictures and find them useful in time.
